The Dowell family involvement in the sheep industry in Tucumcari, New Mexico, dates back to 1965 when the Dowell family moved to Tucumcari from Muleshoe, Texas. They established their farming and ranching operations and became well-known in the commercial sheep industry.
Growing up, Dallas, was actively involved in the family sheep business and showed family produced lambs in 4H and FFA. This sparked his interest in producing quality show lambs. After earning his degree at New Mexico State University, Dallas took over the family farm and ranch where he, a mechanic, and his wife Sue, a teacher, raised their children Tiffany and Denton.
Tiffany and Denton were both active in 4H and FFA. They were very competitive in judging, public speaking, and showing programs. During their high school years with the guidance of Dallas and their FFA Advisor, Jerry Franklin, Tiffany and Denton continued the family tradition of showing lambs and wanting to expand and to improve the production of the show lamb herd. Tiffany married Ty Lashmet in 2014, and their children Braun and Harper have now joined the operation. Denton and his wife Maddie were married in 2021 and have added their daughter, Dakota, to the crew.
Dowell Show Lamb ewes' genetic background includes Franklin, Gerhart, Huntrods, Miller, Simpson, and Stultz flocks. Their rams offer genetics from Franklin, Huntrods, and Franklin-Cover flocks.
